Betsy Byars knows how to appeal to children and young adults. It's why she has published more than 50 books in a career spanning five decades.

Born in 1928, Byars grew up in North Carolina and graduated from Queens College with a major in English. She immediately began publishing short magazine articles. However, it wasn't until many years later-when her children were teenagers that she launched a career as a young adult novelist. She and her husband, both of them pilots, now live in South Carolina.

Betsy Byars is a well-decorated author. Her awards include a Newbery, an American Book Award, an Edgar, and a Regina Medal.
