Arthur C. Clarke
When listing the giants in science fiction writing, one name that always comes up is that of Arthur C. Clarke. The creator of 2001, Clarke has written more than 60 books. He has won all of the field's highest honors including Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America, Kalinga Prize, Hugo (twice), Nebula, and Campbell.
In addition to his hefty reputation as a writer, Clarke is a scientist, known
for his invention of satellite communication. His interest in science started
early: he built his first telescope at age 13. He is the founder of the British
Interplanetary Society, that originally met in his apartment.
Eventually his interests went from space to sea and he engaged in a great deal of exploration and diving until he became physically unable to do so.
Clarke was born in Somerset, England in 1917 and has lived in Sri Lanka since 1956. He was granted a British knighthood in 1998.
