Dick Francis

With a birthday on Halloween, Dick Francis was born to the mysterious and since 1962 has been a giant in the mystery genre.

Born in Wales in 1920, Francis' first career and love was as a steeplechase jockey. Indeed, in his racing career, he won more than 350 races and was the official jockey to Queen Elizabeth in the mid 50s. After falling off the Queen Mother's horse, he retired from racing and began writing.

It was as a writer that he gained international fame and was eventually made an Officer of the most noble Order of the Empire in 1984. He's also won a Silver Dagger, Gold Dagger, and Diamond Dagger Award and three Edgar awards. Six of his novels have been made into movies or television shows. He brought his racing expertise to the novels and turned them into racetrack mysteries.
