Tony Hillerman

It's not surprising that the Malice Domestic recognized Tony Hillerman in 2001 for a lifetime of achievement in the mystery genre. Nor that the Mystery Writers of America named him a Grandmaster of Mystery Writing in 1989. He's won nearly every award there is to win for his series of mysteries set in Navajo country.

He was raised among the Pottawatomie and Seminole Indians, giving him further preparation for his writing career. After high school he joined the Army, serving in World War II and earning a Silver Star, the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Purple Heart.

After the war and college, he began working as a journalist, filling positions as reporters, city editors, bureau managers, and editor. Eventually he began teaching journalism at the University of New Mexico. In 1948, he married Marie Unzner. They have six grown children.

Hillerman is a past president of the Mystery Writers of America and has won a Silver Spur Award for best novel set in the West and the American Indian's Ambassador Award.
