Stephen King

Stephen King is the author whose name everyone knows. A bestselling author whose works have been published around the globe, King is the master of the horror/suspense genre and is hailed for his innovations to the business of writing.

Born on September 21, 1947, King grew up in Maine. His writing career began early when he and his brother published their own local town newspaper when King was 12. At age 15, he published his first collection of short stories--through a press that he and a friend created. By age 18, he'd sold his first short story.

In the years since, he's published 49 books and numerous short stories. He's written screenplays and nonfiction in addition to his suspense, horror, and fantasy novels. In the tradition of Alfred Hitchcock, he's made appearances in many of the movies he scripted, including Pet Sematary, Knightriders and Creepshow. His own books have frequently been adapted into movies, some of the best-known being Carrie, The Shining, Salem's Lot, Firestarter, Cujo, and Misery.

He has also published under the name Richard Bachman.
