Robert Silverberg
Robert Silverberg, the youngest writer to ever earn a Hugo, once retired from science fiction writing because he wearied of writing works that weren't up to his standards because they were what the market demanded. Before that 1959 retirement-a retirement which fellow science fiction writer Frederik Pohl coaxed him out of-Silverberg had published several short stories and novels, beginning at age 18. In fact, between 1957 and 1959, he published more than 220 short stories and 11 novels (under several different pen names).
He graduated from Columbia University with a degree in Comparative Literature. While he retired for a while from science fiction, Silverberg continued to write, publishing 70 nonfiction books. He eventually returned to science fiction, but with an emphasis on creating more literary and darker works.
Throughout his lifetime so far, Silverberg has won five Nebulas and been nominated for a total of 20. He's won five Hugos and been nominated for 28. His awards have been received in every decade from the 1950s to the 2000s.
Silverberg has also written under the following names (sometimes as a ghost writer): Gordon Aghill, Robert Arnette, Loren Beauchamp, T.D. Bethlen, Edgar Black, Alexander Blade, Lawrence Blaine, Carter Brown, Dr. Walter C. Brown, Ralph Burke, Robert Burke, W.R.
