Jack Vance

Born in 1916, Jack Vance is such a prolific writer of science fiction and fantasy that it took David Mead three volumes to create an encyclopedia of Vance's life and work. Vance studied at the University of California, beginning his studies in mining engineering, then physics, and finally journalism. Vance began writing in the 40s and 50s-contributing to science fiction and fantasy magazines and publishing his first novel in 1950.

Like many of his peers in the genre, Vance is a prolific writer who has published steadily for more than 60 years. During the course of his lengthy career, he has garnered a bandolier of major awards, including an Edgar, two Hugos, a Nebula, a Jupiter, an Achievement Award, Gilgam's X Award, World Fantasy Lifetime Award, and a Grand Master designation.

Vance has written under the names Jack Vance, Alan Wade, Peter Held, John Holbrook, and John van See.
