Jack Williamson

Born 1908-in what was then called the Arizona Territory-Williamson has been steadily publishing books that set science fiction standards since he was first published in 1928.

A grand master who was contemporaries with Heinlein and Asimov, Williamson continues to produce novels well into the 2000s. He is credited with coining such phrases as "genetic engineering" and "terraforming."

Jack Williamson earned both a bachelor's and a master's from Eastern New Mexico University, an institution that he would later join as part of the English faculty. He also earned a doctorate from the University of Colorado, writing his dissertation on H.G. Wells.

He's won both a Hugo and a Nebula and was recognized with lifetime achievement awards from World Fantasy Convention and the Horror Writers of America. He was the second person to ever receive the title of Grand Master of Science Fiction.
