Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the Caldecott and Newbery Awards, the Boston Globe-Horn Book Awards are among the most prestigious in the children and young adult literature industry.

Since 1967, judges have evaluated children's literature published in the United States and selected those that achieve excellence. The awards were first given to fiction and picture books, but they now also include poetry with fiction and have a category for non-fiction. They also give an occasional special citation for a book with high quality and overall creative excellence.

While the books must be published in the United States-and are submitted for consideration by publishers-the writers and illustrators may be citizens of any country.

The judges will not consider textbooks, e-books, or audiobooks.

Winners and up to two honor books are announced in June of each year with an award ceremony being held in September in Boston, Massachusetts.
