Bram Stoker Awards for Superior Achievement
When Horror Writers Association formed in 1987, talk immediately began about creating an award recognizing great works of horror. Some members hesitated as they wanted the association to encourage collaboration, not competition. So when the awards were established, it was to recognize superior achievement, not the "best" in a given year.
The awards are also given on a non-juried basis; the members of the association nominate works for the ballot which all of the membership then votes on. The awards are given annually at the Horror Writers Association conference. Winners receive an eight-inch replica of a haunted house, sculpted by artist Steven Kirk.
The award itself is named after the author of Dracula.
